Yeah, I can’t believe I forgot about this topic.

What are some songs with your favourite solos? Guitar, bass, drums, short solos, long solos, anything. Who’s your favourite soloist?

I can’t wait for your suggestions for great powerful solos!

Don’t get me wrong, Stairway is amazing, but I still like Free Bird better ;)

How about Hotel California, Comfortably Numb and Sultans of Swing? Any takers for those?

I’ll be a defender of Hotel California there Oren. I remember when I was little, my dad would turn up this song and say “listen”. With the lyrics and melody aside, the solo in this song is so hauntingly awesome.

Some of my favourite solos (as already noted on my top songs list for the most part):

    Universally Speaking,

    I Can’t Tell You Why,

    Hold Me (short solo),

    The Chain (bass solo),

    My Lonely Man (bass solo),

Dirty Laundry (Farewell Tour 1 version, solo by Joe Walsh rules),

Mysterious Ways (best version on Popmart Mexico video with The Edge’s funky dance),

I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You (totally amazing)

and Baba O’riley’s awesome Irish fiddle solo.

Guitar? Bass? Drums? You’re forgeting some of the most important instruments of rock music!

[guitar] Let There Be Rock (Live Version) – AC/DC

[guitar] Muffin Man – Frank Zappa

[guitar] Guitar Virus – Praxis (Buckethead is the guitarist)

    [drums] In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida – Iron Butterfly

[electric bass] I Will Possess Your Heart – Death Cab for Cutie

[electric bass, xylophone, saxophone] One Better – Les Claypool

[bowed guitar] Ignorance is Bliss – Colonel Claypool’s Bucket Of Bernie Brains

[saxophone] So Much to Say – Dave Matthews Band

[organ] Light My Fire – The Doors

[banjo] The State of Massachusetts – Dropkick Murphys

    [violin/fiddle] Devil’s Dance Floor – Flogging Molly

[classical piano] You Don’t Understand Me – The Raconteurs

    [triangle] YYZ – Rush

[record scratching] Rockit – Herbie Hancock

    [spoons] Spoonman – Soundgarden

[vocals] Hocus Pocus – Focus (look at his face! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpV5InLw52U lol)

My personal favorites have to be the triange or the spoons :p

As for Led Zeppelin, I vote Dazed + Confused.

    You’re right, I forgot a few instruments.

To add up- my favourite sax solo is Pink Floyd’s Money (it’s just clean and classic), and my favourite vocal sort-of-solo is Chris Martin’s Live 8 performance of In My Place. I don’t have a favourite spoons solo yet, but I’ll check out Spoonman.

And if we’re at weird, my favourite Swedish Chef solo can be found here.

At the risk of getting flak, I would recommend that all ye people listen to Cemetery Gates by Pantera.
Ignore their lyrics – they aren’t the band which tries to be profound. Just hear the riffs, the solo and the vocals. I think its totally awesome.
Oh, and by the way, listen to Silent Lucidity by Queensryche.

[guitar] All along the watchtower – Jimi Hendrix (I think, this one beats all solos hands down! Pure and incendiary)

[bass] The real me – The Who (No discussion on bass is complete without John Entwistle. Though others might rave about Jaco Pastorius, I think Entwistle takes the crown)

[drums] Vicarious by Tool (Album: 10,000 Days) | Set the controls for the heart of the Sun – Live at Pompeii
